Alternative School

The Eckhart School serves as the Alternative School for middle and high school students.  The Alternative School is designed to be a continuum of educational services for students whose needs can not be meet in the middle school or comprehensive high school setting.  The Alternative School site hosts services which reullt from collaboration with Allegany County Department of Social Services, the Sheriff's Department, the Local Management Board, and the Allegany County Health Department. 

A decision to place a student at the Alternative School is made when the sending school can document that measures taken to ensure success in the home school have not worked on behalf of the student.  The decision to place a student at the Alternative School involves the parent, the home school administration, the Alternative School administration, and pupil personnel workers.

At times, a student's placement at the Alternative School may be the result of an administrative hearing when the conduct of the student falls into the category of severely disruptive to the normal school environment.  Placement of a special education student at the Alternative School requires a program review to determine if the misbehavior was a manifestation of the student's handicapping condition.
