Family and Consumer Science

The purpose of Family and Consumer Science Education is to prepare students for family life, work life and careers in family and consumer sciences.  The middle school curriculum provides opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors for becoming responsible citizens and leaders in the family and community.  Students develop skills to:

  • promote nutrition and wellness
  • manage resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families
  • balance personal, home, family and work lives
  • understand human growth and development

Family and Consumer Sciences empowers individuals and families to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse, global society.  The unique focus is on families, work and their interrelationships.

The Voluntary State Curriculum is in the draft stage and is currently being used as a guiding document by the Middle School Family and Consumer Science Teachers.

Technology Education

The purpose of Technology Education in the middle school is to prepare students with an understanding of the progression and scope of technology through exploratory experiences.  The curriculum follows the Engineering by Design Model.  The programs in grades 6, 7, and 8 include Exploring Technology, Invention and Innovation, and Technological Systems.  This program provides students with a foundation in the role of technology in everyday life, along with a broad range of technological skills that make them aware of technology around them.  Students completing the program will become technologically literate by learning the concepts and role that engineering, design, innovation and invention, have in creating technology systems that help make life easier and better.  Students learn that technology must be assessed to determine the positive and negative effects, and how these have shaped today's global society.  The key component of the program is that students become knowledeable about technology, and use hands-on lessons to apply and transfer this knowledge to common problems.
