All Allegany County Public Schools are operating on a normal schedule.

Mathematics

The content areas in which all students must become proficient through the completion of Math 6, Math 7, Math 8 include the Maryland State Curriculum Standards: (1) knowledge of algebra, patterns and functions; (2) knowledge of geometry; (3) knowledge of measurement; (4) knowledge of statistics; (5) knowledge of probability; (6) knowledge of number relationships or computations; and, (7) processes of mathematics including problem solving, reasoning, communication and connections. In addition to the content standards of the State Curriculum, the Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for Students are incorporated into the mathematics classes.

According to the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM), classrooms should be places where students regularly “engage in tasks and experiences designed to deepen and connect their knowledge.” To this end the Mathematics Department’s goal is to integrate into the curriculum mathematics content and instruction to facilitate the development of these connections.

Also in the PSSM, it states, “A curriculum is more than a collection of activities: it must be coherent, focused on important mathematics, and well articulated across the grades.” As a result, the State of Maryland and the Allegany County Board of Education has adopted a “standards based approach” for presenting the mathematics curriculum. The content standards have been identified in the SC (State Curriculum) for Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, and Algebra I.

Middle School Mathematics Courses

Grade 6 Mathematics - Course 1
Grade 7 Mathematics - Course 2
Grade 7 Mathematics - Course 3 **
Grade 8 Mathematics - Course 3
Grade 8 Algebra I - 341 (1 credit)*

* This course satisfies the requirement to complete a course with Algebra content, however, students are still required to complete (3) mathematics courses in grades 9-12.

** 7th grade students on track to take Algebra I in Grade 8 have a more rigorous curriculum to follow to ensure they possess the content knowledge necessary to be successful in a credited high school course.
